Why are the first 1,001 days of life so critical?

Our relationships, experiences and environments during our first five years shape the adults we become and the society we create.

The Royal Foundation, Centre for Early Childhood

The key to a healthy, happy society lies in early childhood.

The Royal Foundation, Centre for Early Childhood have launched ‘Shaping Us,’ a long-term public awareness campaign designed to transform the issue from one of scientific interest to one of the most strategically important topics of our time.

The Princess of Wales explains why #ShapingUs is crucial

“Now is the moment to place care and connection at the heart of all we do, and to shape a future in which love can truly flourish.”

The Princess of Wales

"The 1,001 critical days - from pregnancy to age two - are when the building blocks for lifelong emotional and physical wellbeing are laid down. We believe every baby should experience the best start in life. We help make this happen by providing grant funding for charities delivering support services in family hubs and other similar settings, commissioning research into the best support during the perinatal period, and promoting the importance of the 1001 critical days around the world." Andrea Leadsom, 1,001 Critical Days

The Rt Hon Dame Andrea Leadsom speaks from the heart at the launch of the 1001 Alliance in Norway, highlighting the importance of supporting new parents and ensuring babies and the early years are firmly on policymakers’ agendas around the world.

On 11 September 2025, Dame Andrea Leadsom and Kieran Anders from Dad Matters UK joined Iain Dale on LBC News to share the staggering findings of our world-first research into paternal suicide. The programme became a powerful platform for dads across the UK, who bravely called in to share their experiences of traumatic births, baby loss and mental health struggles.  At the 1001 Critical Days Foundation, we know how vital fathers are to the family unit. It was a privilege to hear from so many men helping to break the silence and open up the national conversation on paternal mental health.
